Alcaraz could be on the brink of Turin pullout
Carlos Alcarz was unable to complete a training session on Tuesday at the ATP Finals as fears grow that the Spainard might have to pull out of the elite year-end event.
Standing by in the wings at the eight-man wrapup if the worst occurs is alternate Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Alcaraz suffered a 6-1, 7-5 drubbing in his opening match in Turin at the hands of Casper Ruud, with his body clearly not at 100 per cent..
The former world no. 1 complained of being unable to breathe at times and was seen rubbing ointment onto his chest during some changeovers.
But Tuesday’s brief end after less than half an hour to the sparring session indicated that the fitness situation of Alcaraz may not be improving. He and hitting partner Andres Martin had been scheduled for an hour and a half on the practice court located in the public lobby of the arena.
Alcaraz then took the rest of the day off, with a decision coming later as to whether he can front up for his second match on Wednesday against Andrey Rublev, another player with a 0-1 record at the group stage.
