Alcaraz fights off feisty Aussie underdog
Holder Carlos Alcaraz quickly found his comfort zone in his first grass outing of the summer, with the Spaniard claiming his 14th straight match win on Tuesday to advance at Queen’s Club.
The top seed is bidding for a third consecutive title after winning Rome and Roland Garros on clay.
Alcaraz extended his run with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) first-round win over lucky loser from qualifying Adam Walton. The world No. 86 played well out of his depth as he tested the Spanish favourite over an hour and three-quarters.
Alcaraz left it late to confirm his entry after taking a few days of post-Paris fun in the sun on the Spanish party island of Ibiza.
But once safely through on the lawns, he said he was glad to have made the trip to defend his title.
“I’m happy to be back and playing again on grass,” the only former champion in the field said.
“The start of the tournament on grass is never easy. You have to get used to things.
“But I’m happy with the performance. I feel great after this win. I just need to get a bit more comfortable on the surface.
“I’m happy to get through, I would have loved to have more time to recover after Roland Garros, but I’ve got a few days to get ready (for Wimbledon starting June 30)
Alcaraz had to save two break points late in the second set before advancing with a tiebreak win to close out victory.
