Alcaraz on course for career Grand Slam after beating de Minaur
22 year old Carlos Alcaraz silenced the home crown on Rod Laver Arena humbling Alex De Minaur 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 and ending Australia’s hopes of a home singles champion.
The last Aussie to win the title here was five decades ago when unseeded and ranked 212 Mark Edmondson beat John Newcombe in 1976 at Kooyong in an all Aussie final.
In reaching the semi-final the Spaniard is still on course to become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.
World No. 1 Alcaraz already has six Grand Slam titles, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open twice – but this is the first time he has reached the final four in Melbourne.
He hasn’t yet dropped a set at this year’s event.
“I’m happy with the way I am playing here. From the first round to now,I am increasing my level every match,” said Alcaraz, who will face German third seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals.
“Today I felt really comfortable, playing great tennis which I am proud about. I am really happy to get into the semi-final.”
