Alcaraz re-establishes seeded superiority over Fonseca
Carlos Alcaraz made a point in his opening win at the MIami Masters, with the world No. 1 putting down a rebellion from teenaged Brazilian Joao Fonseca with a 6-4, 6-4 win to reach the third round.
Fonseca, 19, is tipped to join Alcraz and Jannik Sinner at the top of the sport, but showed he still needs some seasoning.
The youngster has lost in consecutive events to second-ranked Sinner as well as going down to Alcaraz after a day of rain interruptions in Miami.
Expat Brazilians in the Latin hotbed showed their support for Fonseca, who put up a fight before taking the loss.
“I know how good Joao is, and that’s why I was really focused, every point, every shot,” Alcaraz said. “I’m just happy to stay calm, to stay positive in those moments.
“Most of the games, I just served pretty well, which was a really great weapon today for me.”
The 22-year-old Spaniard who saved three break points, added : “I was really good in crucial moments. I was really good from the beginning until the last ball.”
And as for the challenger: “For him (Fonseca) , playing toe to toe with us, I think he and his team are going to get great feedback to know what he should improve in the future.
“He has everything, great shots, a lot of things to improve, but for sure he’s going to do it.”
Alcaraz was coming off his first loss of 2026 after going down to Daniil Medvedev in an Indian Wells semi-final last week and has now won his 18th match of the season.
He has played semis at 13 of his past 14 tournaments.
