Alcaraz will barely notice missing Sinner at IW
Carlos Alcaraz will certainly not be bothered by the absence of rival Jannik Sinner as the Indian Wells Masters begins on Wednesday without the world No. 1.
The Spaniard is seeking a record-equalling third title win in a row at the California desert venue; Sinner is banned after two positive antidoping tests from last season for which authorities said he actually bore zero responsibility.
Nevertheless, Alcaraz is hoping to use the 12-day marathon event as a boost to his own stalled fortunes this season, where his only highlight was last month’s Rotterdam title.
“Jannik’s not playing, but there are a lot of the best players in the world (here),” the 21-year-old world No. 3 said.
“The draw is really open, and a lot of players [are] playing great tennis.”
Alcaraz added: “Approach the tournament, it doesn’t change at all. I’m just focused on my things, on myself, and I try to play good tennis here.”
The Spaniard is trying to ignore the fact that if he can buck the odds and collect a third consecutive title here he would join icons Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as a multiple winner at the event.
“I will try not to think about it. I will try just to enjoy it,” he said. Every time I come here, I enjoy so much … practicing, playing. Everything for me here is so easy.
“So all I’m thinking is to enjoy this tournament. I’m waiting the whole year just to come back here.
“So I will try not to think about it. Just flow and see how it’s going to be. … But it is something that for me would be great to achieve.”
