Andreeva aims to emulate Federer mystique
Mirra Andreeva dreams of achieving the legendary cool of all-time great Roger Federer, whose tennis game face was legendary.
The 18-year-old who reached the Wimbledon fourth round for the second time in three editions said she is working on her own emotional control and proved it with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Hailey Baptiste on Saturday.
“I felt like every time I watched him he just knew what to do at every score, in every situation that’s going on the court,” the teenager said.
“He was handling the pressure moments, he was facing break points.. when he was down in the score, his face didn’t change. Neve
“I felt like this was super hard to play against.”
Eight-time Wimbledon winner Federer played his last Wimbledon in 2021, a year before his retirement in September, 2022; he lifted his last trophy here in 201
Even as a child only starting in tennis, Andreeva had her eye on the habits of the Swiss icon.
“When you see that you’re winning and everything is going your way, and you look at your opponent and it’s like nothing happened.. he’s just continuing playing the same way and raising his level,” Andreeva said.
“I felt like this could be a really really hard opponent to face.”
WTA No. 7 Andreeva sees a lot of the Federer emotional style in her current range of leading opponents.
“From current players, I think Aryna, Coco, Iga.. almost all the top women players have the same mentality and the same kind of way to present themselves on court.
“A lot of top players have that now. That’s why it’s tough to beat them.
“I feel like every time I play someone in the top 10 or 20 it’s getting harder. Their mindset is different.”
