Alexander Zverev could not believe that he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open on Tuesday, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (0), 2-6, 6-1 over Tommy Paul after being thoroughly dominated in the first two sets by the American.

Paul, seeded 12th,had set points in each of the first two sets and served for each of them only to go begging.

Meanwhile Zverev ruled in the two tiebreakers.

The German finally put the win to bed on his third match point to his own surprise as he won a day match, his least preferred time slot at Melbourne Park..

“I don’t know how I won, I should have been down two sets to love. At the start he played better than me but I somehow won the first two sets.

“The fourth was the best I played,” said the player who only dropped two sets on his way into the semis.  I’m extremely happy to be back in the semi-finals.”

The second seed who has played two Grand Slam finals was tested for more than three and a half hours by an opponent who produced more than 50 unforced errors.

Zverev said he would have much preferred to play at night after getting through his afternoon scorcher.

.”I feel the ball so well at night, I kind of struggle in the day.”

Zverev missed his tune-up event, the United Cup team event from late December when he withdrew due to a shoulder injury.

“My level is very good now,  I was uncertain coming in, I didn’t have the preparation I wanted.”

The winner will play his third semi-final hereafter 2020 and a year ago when he lost to Daniil Medvedev.
