De Minaur reaches maiden Australian Quarter final
8th Seed Alex de Minaur reached his maiden home Grand Slam quarter final by beating 20 year old Alex Michelsen in straight sets 6-0, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
This completed his Grand Slam “full set” having reached the quarter finals in all the Majors.
De Minaur now has a perfect 17-0 record against lower ranked opponents in a hard court major..
After his win De Minaur said “I had my opportunities in the second set to maybe run away with that and not let him in sight of the match, but I was not able to close out,”
“He raised his level and made it a tough match. That second set was pivotal and I was happy to bounce back after not a game to get broken. That second set was massive.”
“It means the world,”
“There is nothing I want to do more than play well here in Australia in front of you guys. I am glad I finally made it to the quarter-finals. Let’s go for bigger and better things.”
De Minaur will play World No. 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner in the quarter final, and becomes the 35th Australian to reach the last eight in Melbourne, but only the third in the last 20 years, following in the footsteps of Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios.
