Australian Open 2025 Men’s Day 9
Jannik Sinner fought through a medical timeout scenario and a broken showcourt net to emerge into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Monday with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Holger Rune.
The Italian defending champion needed an off-court medical timeout as he led 3-2 in the third set against the Dane in sweltering.temperatures in the mid-30s Celsius.
Later, a Sinner serve dislodged the centre screw holding down the net, which resulted in both men going off court for 15 minutes while repairs were made.
Through it all, the world No. 1 kept his poise on the way to a victory which took more than three hours.
He broke twice in the fourth set to put the seal on victory into his 10th Grand Slam quarter-final.
Sinner crossed the finishing line on his first match point but would not go into any detail at all of his physical problems.
“I don’t want to talk so much how I felt today. I was not feeling really well.
I was struggling physically.
“i knew that it was going to be very, very difficult today, playing a tough
opponent, but also playing against myself a little bit.
“I tried to handle the situation on the court as good as I could, which I think today I handled as well as possible.
“I’m happy to be in the next round.”
Experienced Italian Lorenzo Sonego ended the impromptu run of US qualifier Learner Tien 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1
Ben Shelton of the US wore down 38-year-old Gael Monfils, advancing as the Frenchman retired trailing 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2) 1-0.
“I’m always happy, there are always some positives,” Monfils said.
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish the match, but I’m happy with all I gave today.
“It’s been a very long tour for me, playing a lot of matches, spending a lot of hours.
“Some days are tougher. Today was one where I think I was already very close to the limit – I think I passed it, unfortunately.”
