Australian Open 2025 Women’s Day 11
Iga Swiatek matched her career-best showing at the Australian Open on Wednesday as the second seed defeated Emma Navarro 6-1, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals.
The five-time Grand Slam champion has a slight hole in her resumee in Melbourne, where she claimed a final-four spot only once before, in 2022.
But the Polish second seed ensured her presence at the top table of the season’s first Grand Slam with victory over American eighth seed Navarro in 91 minutes, advancing on a second match point.
The former world No. 1 has lost just 14 games at this Open edition in reaching the semis.
“It was a much tougher match than the scoreline,” the winner said. Emma is a fighter, she won’t pull back.
“I had to focus and keep my intensity. I’m happy I won the tight games, that made the difference.
“To be in the semi-finals again is great. I’ll push for more.”
Swiatek will bring a 4-1 record over Madison Keys into their Thursday semi-final, after the American defeated Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“It will be a tricky match,” Swiatek said. “I’ll focus on myself and try to bring my best game and intensity.”
The 29-year-old Keys, playing here for the 11th time, has reached her third Melbourne semi-final after 2015 and 2022.
The 2017 US Open finalist needed a comeback after losing the first set to Svitolina.
“After the first set, I had to start playing more aggressively and get more to the net,” Keys said.”She had been controlling the points and making me run. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since my first Grand Slam semi-final (here).
“I guess now I play smarter, but not as fearless. I’m really proud of myself and excited to play another semi here in Melbourne.
