Coco Gauff rocked a Marvel-inspired outfit as the self-confessed comics fan delivered a knockout blow to former winner Sofia Kenin, advancing 6-3, 6-3 on Monday into the Australian Open second round.

Third seed Gauff needed less than 90 minutes to eliminate 2020 Melbourne champion Kenin, who has not passed the fourth round at a major since her highlight victory.

Gauff was happy during the on-court interview to explain details of her now outfit which features deep side cutouts and a bodysuit design.

The American fired a dozen aces to subdue Kenin in what she had feared might be a struggle.

“When I saw the draw, I (thought) it’s not a great first round. She’s one of those people that can play great tennis,” Guff said.

“She’s obviously won this tournament before, so if you get through that, then you have set the tone for a high level throughout the tournament.”

Second-seeded five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek came through a no-drama first-round win, hammering Czech Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-4 in 81 minutes

“It wasn’t the easiest match to start. But I’m happy that I played better at the end of the second set.

“I was able to learn from what I did wrong in the first set sometimes when she broke back.

“But yeah, for sure, it was a solid match and I’m happy I’m through to the second round.”

Wild card Talia Gibson became the first Australian to score a win after two days of play, with the 20-year-old defeating Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 to reach the second round after two and a quarter hours.

The outsider moved into a match against Spanish 11th seed Paula Badosa.

Compatriot Alja Tomljanovic duplicated the home success as she defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 4-6, 6-4

Elena Svitloina, twice a Melbourne quarter-finalist, began by stopping Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-4.

Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti upset two-time Melbourne champion Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 7-6 (2)  in a slow-moving contest lasting two and a quarter-hours.

British qualifying lucky loser Harriet Dart advanced 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7) over Croat qualifier Jana Fett, joining compatriot Jodie Burrage, who advanced past Leolia Jeanjean of France 6-2, 6-4 after more than three hours of battle.

Swiss Belinda Bencic, coming back to tennis as a new mother, knocked out Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 7-6 (6).
