Alexander Zverev ended the upset run of Learner Tien on Tuesday, with the German schooling the youngster 6-3,  6-7 (5), 6-1, 7-6 (3)  on a heatwave Tuesday for a return to the Australian Open semi-finals on Tuesday.

The quarter-final was played under the closed roof of the Laver showcourt with the tournament heat effect rules in pace as temperatures spiked toward 45 on a record-setting day.

Zverev and the youngster coached by Michael Chang duelled for just over three hours, with Tien saving a pair of match points before Zverev closed out victory.

The German who has finished Grand Slam runner-up three times, joins Novak Djokovic with at least 10 semi-final appearances at the majors.

He is unbelievable from the baseline,” the winner said of his American challenger. “I’ve not played anyone that good (from the back of the court) in a long time.

“But my (24) aces helped. I probably would not have won without them. I’m happy with both my serve and reaching the semis.”

Zverev was tested in the match which went to a pair of tiebreak sets as he improved to 3-2 in his career series with Tien.

“The last 10 days I felt healthy,which is very nice, and pain-free, which I haven’t felt in a long time… probably in 12 months.

“That’s a good starting point for me. I feel like I’m playing well. I feel happy on the court because I am playing pain-free and I’m playing at a good level. 

“Of course, winning always helps. You know, when you are winning, you are
always happier automatically as an athlete.”
