Booze off the menu for fans in the stands at RG
Spectators at Roland Garros face a total alcohol ban in stadium stands after an incident involving a spectator spitting gum on David Goffin mid-match.
As a result of complaints by the Belgian, TD Amelie Mauresmo on Thursday announced a lightning crackdown on drinking during matches.
While fans will be able to freely swill sponsor champagne plus French vino and beers around the grounds, cups are off limits while spectating.
The offender who Goffin said spit on him has yet to be found during a Tuesday win over French wildcard Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
.”Umpires are really going to be even more strict to further respect to the players and respect the game,” Mauresmo said.
“This is something that we’re not going to tolerate, to overstep these two things. That’s for sure.”
The former Grand Slam champion added: “In terms of security, we’re going to try to see which people are making – I think it’s a few individuals at some point – that are overstepping.
“(Security will) try to calm them down or or they go out. If they go too far, they go out.”
