Breakthrough Lilli scores first WTA title
Teenaged Lilli Tagger won the first title of her career on Sunday with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 fightback to defeat Daris Snigur and win the WTA event in Prague.
The 18-year-old Austrian came goo in the second Tour-level final of her career after losing one in 2025 in China.
The Roland Garros junior champion from last season trailed 4-1 in the first set but slowly reeled in her eighth-seeded opponent from Ukraine ranked 20 spots higher than her own No. 74.
Tagger;s victory may go some way in papering over first round defeats in both Paris and Wimbledon this season.
The winner who grew up just across the border from the Italian Dolomite home of Jannik Sinner and shares the same Germanic cultural heritage fired nine aces while breaking her opponent four times from eight chances.
The player with a rare one-handed backhand lost her own serve only once in the 90-minute clay final in the Czech capital.
Tagger put out former Czech Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejcikova in a three-set semi-final. The teenager will become the youngest in the top 50 in Monday’s rankings.
