Roger Federer has no plans for a mid-40s comeback, with the retired icon happy to limit his on-court time to a Tuesday exhibition prior during the US Open run-up week.

The 45-year-old Swiss quit the sport in 2022, will pickup a racquet for the fist time prior to his induction into the Tennis Hall of Fame at the weekend.

And the winner of 20 Grand Slam titles judged as perhaps the best to ever play, admits he got some butterflies.

“I haven’t played a singles set in, I don’t know, (Hubert) Hurkacz at Wimbledon maybe, so it’s been five years,” Federer said on Monday.

“I don’t know how it’s going to go tomorrow. So there is a lot of uncertainty but a lot of happiness that I can return to Arthur Ashe, a place where I have had so many beautiful moments.”

Federer’s appearance will comprise one set against former rival Andy Roddick and a set of doubles alongside John McEnroe against Roddick and Andre Agassi.

The Swiss made sure to clarify that he would not be embarking on any kind of a comeback as have contemporaries Venus and Serena Williams – admittedly with little or no success.

“Thanks for asking,” he told a media conference at the US Open site.

“I wasn’t sure if the question was going to get asked, but I’m happy you did so I can clarify in case anybody thought,,,,,,,.”

Federer won the Flushing Meadows title uninterruptedly from 2004 through 2008 and reached two more finals.

Arthur Fils claimed the first Masters title of his career on Sunday with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 defeat of Frances Tiafoe to win the Cincinnati trophy, sealing it on his third match point..

The 22-year-old is the first Frenchman to lift the prestigious title since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto a dozen years ago.

Fils swept the opening set but was overpowered by Tiafoe in the second before coming back strong in the third set.

Fils set up the third match winner with a lob and benefitted as his opponent sent a return long over the baseline to win in 98 minutes.

Fis blazed through the opening games, breaking Tiafoe for 2-0 and winning the first seven points of the final.

His momentum barely slowed as he established a 5-2 lead and finished off the opening set in 29 minutes with his eighth ace.

Fils suffered his first setback in the second set,saving three break points in the second game but firing a forehand long on a fourth as Tiafoe took a 2-0 lead.

The American grabbed all of his chances as he ran to a 6-1 win to level at a set apiece as skies darkened overhead after just 54 minutes on court.

Tiafoe took the opportunity to call for the trainer for a massage on the right hip which has bothered him in recent weeks.

Fils regrouped to star the third set, breaking Tiafoe for 2-0 and again for 4-0 as his intensity kept rising with the finishing line in sight.

“I started the first set very very strong,” Fills said.

“In the second set I lost a bit of focus, he put me under pressure.

“But I had a small talk with myself in front of the mirror after the second set. I said ‘if you are going to lose, it cannot get worse than this. You need to fight.

“I don’t have any words to describe this win. There is a bit of relief. It was a hell of a week.”

“The result marked the second time that Tiafoe has lost in a final here after going out to Jannik Sinner in 2024.

Jannik Sinner on Friday withdrew from the US Open with his continuing knee problems, with the world No. 1 aiming to be back on court for the ATP’s autumn Asian swing.

The Italian has not played since winning Wimbledon, making pullouts from the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters event.

The Open received some possible good news when injured Carlos Alcaraz posted on social media that he would be in New York but provided few details if he was speaking of singles or the exhibition celebrity mixed doubles playoff set for next week.

The Spaniard hurt his wrist in mid-April and has not played since,all the while dropping hints of a comeback.

“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” Sinner said in a statement. .

“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue,” Sinner added.

“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart.”

Also missing from the field at the last Grand Slam of the season will be chronically injured Brit Jack Draper, plagued by a long-term arm injury.

He has managed 16 matches over the past year, most recently losing at the ongoing Cincinnati Masters after going out in the first round the week before in Montreal..
