Coach Cahill might just stick around after all
Coach Darren Cahill’s plan to retire at the end of the season form Team Sinner might have gone up in smoke after his charge won Wimbledon on Sunday.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner beat Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to in a revenge win from the Roland Garros final which might be the trigger which keeps the well respected Cahill on board for another few seasons.
The 59-year-old said months ago that this would be his last season. But he might not have counted on his charge winning two of the three Grand Slams played this year and bouncing back with a solid victory from his loss to Alcaraz in Paris five weeks ago.
Modest Aussie Cahill refused to be drawn out as to his future plans, But Sinner gave the game away during the Italian portion of his post-victory media session.
“We made a bet before the final, I told him that if I won, I could choose whether he could stay or not at the end of the year. Now the choice is mine!” he joked in Italian.
:“I’ve always looked for an honest person who gives me a lot not only on the tennis court but also in life outside, both in success and in disappointments. He’s fantastic at that.
“If I choose to stay with him, he probably won’t travel as much anymore, that’s normal. I’ve always told him that in Australia I’d like to have him, because things are going well.
“Then the season is still long, there are still many tournaments, and I’ll see him many more times… But I won the bet, now we’ll see.”
