Coco boilover just a memory as US reach United up quarters
Coco Gauff reversed course after losing a singles match for the first time at the United Cup Monday, with the world No. 3 pulling herself together to help the defending champions into the quarter-finals.
Gauff was humbled in the singles rubber against Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, going down 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-0. Maneiro beat a top five opponent for the first time as she earned the opening point for her team at the 18-nation event.
Teammate Taylor Fritz needed more than three hours to beat Spain’s Jaume Munar 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (6) and level the tie one apiece before the deciding mixed rubber.
“I was getting exhausted late in the second set, I had to unload five or six shots just to win a single point,” Fritz said.
“I started feeling my (problem) knee towards the end but it didn’t get any worse. It was not bad enough to stop me from playing through.”
Gauff combined with Christian Harrison in the deciding mixed rubber, with the ad hoc team dominating Spanish subs Ivonne Cavalle-Reimers and Inigo Cervantes 7-6 (5), 6-0 to move into the knockout stage.
