Davis Cup Finals look to be heading East

The ill-starred Davis Cup flirtation with Spain may be ending as soon as next year, with the ITF reportedly eyeing rich sponsorship offers from a trio of eager Chinese venues.

London’s Times reports that Zhuhai, across the bay from Hong Kong’s Chep Lap Kok airport, plus the nearby pair of Guangzhou and Shenzhen north of the SAR are also being considered.

At stake is the current prize packet of USD 15 million of which 2.1 million goes to the winning team.

The ITF has been searching for a financial saviour event since a too-good-to be true deal with a Spanish football management group hyped as USD 3 billion blew up in 2023.

The current Davis iteration will hold its finals in Malaga, Spain, a fallback perma-host for the reduced competition for the past two editions.

The newspaper said that Malaga might not utilise it’s option to host the Finals for a final year in 2025, leaving tennis bosses in London under pressure to come to a replacement deal for the once-proud competition with more than 120 years of history.
