Determined Draper takes aim at US Open comeback

Jack Draper’s current form remains a huge question mark, with the British No. 1  almost certain to miss Tuesday’s start of the controversial US Open “speed dating” mixed doubles event.

The lefthander has not played since losing in the Wimbledon second round six weeks ago to Marin Cilic and has been out of action since with an arm injury.

Draper had bad luck with the Open’s planned two-day mixed doubles, which was cobbled together as what is looking like a major experiment to try and lure singles players into the mixed game at the final major of the season.

But the Brit’s first partner, Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, underwent arm surgery while second candidate Paula Badosa of Spain – originally set to play with then-boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas – withdrew from the Grand Slam altogether.

It now seems that Draper will need to use next week for training before the Open starts in New York a week from Sunday.

“I found out I had an injury in my arm, which I had been playing with for a little while,” Draper told the LTA.

“The doctors and my team advised me that I’d need to take some time out. I had a few days off, so I chilled and took my mind off tennis.

“Then I was really motivated to come back and do a really good fitness block and work myself hard physically to make some good gains.”

The ATP No. 5 added: “It’s been a really productive few weeks now. It was disappointing to miss Toronto and Cincinnati, but I think it’s been a good period for me to reflect on things and improve.

“I’m really looking forward to going out to the US Open, and I’m in a great place personally and tennis-wise. I feel refreshed, motivated, and I can’t wait to get back out there.”
