Novak Djokovic has pulled out of his last chance for pre-US Open prep, with the 24-time Grand Slam winner planning to skip this week’s start of the Cincinnati Masters.

Monday’s reluctant announcement by tournament officials at the massively expanded 12-day event which has drawn fire from frustrated players means that the Serb will head into the US Open in three weeks – assuming he plays it – without a competitive match since his Wimbledon semi-final loss a month ago to Jannik Sinner.

World No. 1 Sinner, second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz and Djokovic were all missing from the current Toronto Masters which ends Thursday, the day that Cincinnati lumbers into action.

The Djokovic pullout comes a year to the day after the 38-year-old lifted the Paris Olympic gold medal.

Djokovic has won three Cincinnati titles after losing five previous finals to Roger Federer and Andy Murray.
