Djokovic set for Paris knee op

Novak Djokovic is planning to undergo surgery in Paris for a knee injury aggravated at Roland Garros but will then need the speediest of recoveries in order to try and play Wimbledon.

France’s L’Equipe revealed on Wednesday that the Serb who lost his long-held world No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner after withdrawing on Tuesday from a French Open quarter-final will get his medical procedure in Paris – date unspecified.

With the July 1 Wimbledon start just over three weeks away, the 37-year-old’s participation in the grass-court major looks unachievable.

But the Paris Olympics could be a target for the team of the Serb who owns the record 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

Djokovic aggravated his right knee meniscus problem as he took several falls on what he complained was a badly prepared Chatrier court on Monday.

He won a five-set fourth-round match on Monday with Francisco Cerundolo thanks to liberal use of legal painkillers but had to withdraw from a Wednesday quarter-final against Casper Ruud.

The knee problem is the same one which eventually forced the retirement of Swiss legend Roger Federer in 2022 tweaking his own meniscus while running a bath for one of his children.
