Doubles troubles for the Murray boys
The Paris Olympic doubles dreams of Andy and Jamie Murray look like evaporating, with the pair falling short of meeting requirements to enter the Games next month.
Younger brother Andy spelled out the difficulties after taking a first-round singles loss in Stuttgart to Marcos Giron, with the 2012 London and 2016 Rio gold medalist sounding unsure of his chances of fronting up this summer.
And he hinted that trying to play just singles might not be worth the effort.
“I still need to see what happens with the Olympics. I’m not 100 per cent sure what the situation is with the doubles.
“If I just get into the singles, whether or not I will play I don’t know if I would go just for singles.
“I need to wait a little bit and see on that.”
The problem seems to be 38-year-old Jamie, whose current doubles standing of 24th is not enough to see him through into the Olympic tournament.
As a former golden Olympian, Andy can enter on his status; but that is not the same for his sibling.
National federations have a deadline of Tuesday to make the decision on whether to use their exemptions with final team selections set for July 8.
