Draper dumps AO run-up schedule due to injury

Jack Draper has jettisoned his entire Australian Open preparation package as the injured Brit withdrew from the United Cup, citing a “a bit of a niggle” in his hip.

The breakthrough winner of his first two career titles this season in Stuttgart and Vienna pulled the plug on his tune-up event where he would have led Britain into an opening round-robin tie with Australia in the team event.

“As I work to get on top of my hip injury and get match fit, I have unfortunately been advised not to play in the United Cup,” he posted on social media.

The ATP No. 15 added: “As I work to get on top of my hip injury and get match fit, I have unfortunately been advised not to play in the United Cup.

“While we are very positive about competing in the Australian Open this year, I know I won’t be able to jump straight into a packed schedule as I manage and strengthen my hip. Gutted as I was really looking forward to playing in the United Cup for the first time.

“Together with (coach) Leon (Smith), we have also made the difficult decision for me to sit out of the upcoming Davis Cup match in Japan in order to give me the opportunity post-Australian Open to complete the rehab and the strengthening of my hip.”

The Aussie-UK United Cup tie will still feature a “love match” as tennis couple Alex de Minaur of Australia and Brit girlfriend Katie Boulter could be set for a mixed doubles clash.

Draper also missed Roland Garros last spring with a shoulder problem.
