Draper wins Vienna title with fighting second set
Jack Draper stayed calm in a tight second set to win the biggest match of his career with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Karan Khachanov in Sunday’s Vienna ATP final.
The Briton added the Austrian honours to his summer success on clay in Stuttgart and solidified his 15th ranking with one more week left in the season.
Draper survived a roller-coaster second set after winning the first. He then took a 4-0 lead but could only watch as Khachanov ran off five winning games in a row.
But the Brit held his nerve, breaking for a 6-5 lead and saving a pair of break points as game later as he served for the title.
He reflexed a volley into the open court to earn a match point and fell to the court in joy as Khackanov sailed a return wide after 93 minutes.
“I was playing so well in the second set and then the momentum shifted,”
the winner said. “I didn’t feel too nervous and I didn’t get tight.”The momentum shifted a little bit. I missed a few shots here and there and he really got swinging and picked up his level.
“I stayed solid, mentally I was in a good frame. I’m lucky I was able to come through when it mattered.hen it mattered.”
Draper added: after winning his first 500 title: “To win at this level feels incredible, I’m so proud of myself and my team.”
The Briton fired 32 winners including six aces and now stands 37-21 on the season heading into next week’s wrapup event, the Bercy Paris Masters.
