Evans collapse knocks Britain out of Davis Cup

Dan Evans sealed the fate of Britain in Davis Cup play with a 6-0, 7-5 loss to Canadian Denis Shapovalov in group play,

The Brits needed to sweep all three rubbers against the 2022 Davis champions in order to book into November’s Finals in Malaga, Spain.

But Shapo discarded that possibility with his straight-sets win over an opponent who seemed a step slow in front of a sold-out 15,000 home crowd in Manchester.

Argentina also advanced to the last eight in the worldwide team competition with a defeat of Finland.

The Evans ouster nullifies the succeeding rubbers between British US Open semi-finalist Jack Draper and Felix Auger-Aliassime along with the doubles match.

Evans never got stuck into the match with Shapovalov, winning just nine points in the opening set and finally earning a pair of unconverted break points at 4-all in the second set.

The Canadian winner has been struggling to come back from a long-time knee injury
