“Exhausted” Alcaraz pulls from Rotterdam
Carlos Alcaraz wasted no time in clearing his schedule after winning his first Australian Open, with the world No. 1 skipping his title defence at next week’s ATP Rotterdam event.
“After consulting with my team, I had to make the difficult decision to withdraw. I need time to recover after the long series in Australia,” the Spaniard said in a statement.
“It’s disappointing not to be able to return after winning the title last year. I had a great time in Rotterdam last year and hope to return soon. I wish the fans and organisers a fantastic week.”

Alcaraz reportedly made the pullout decision on the morning after Sunday’s four-set title win over Novak Djokovic.
The move puts Melbourne semi-finalist Alexander Zverev into the top seeding in the Dutch port city and leaves TD Richard Krajicek scrambling.
“The Australian Open was long and tough for Carlos. It is a shame for both him and us that his fantastic result is preventing him from participating in Rotterdam,” the Dutch former Wimbledon winner said.
“A key reason for choosing a broad field with many top players is the risk of withdrawals. We are convinced that with the players present, we will have a fantastic week of tennis.”
Joining Zverev at the Ahoy arena from Monday will be 4th-ranked Australian Alex de Minaur and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Brit Jack Draper is also due to make his shoulder injury return to tennis after last playing at the US Open.
