Exhausted Sabalenka a no-go for Canada
Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday pulled out of the upcoming Montreal WTA event, with the world No. 1 citing exhaustion from Wimbledon as her cause for concern.
Sabaelnka went down 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the semi-finals last week to eventual finalist Amanda Anisimova, who was crushed 0-0 in the final by Iga Swiatek.
But Sabalenka has told Canadian officials that she is just not ready to resume competition as the nonstop WTA season morphs into the US Open run-up on hardcourt after a handbrake turn from the grass.
The current top player has had a busy spring and summer, reaching back-to-back semis in Berlin and London plus playing the Roland Garros final last month.
“I’m looking forward to kicking off the North American hard-court swing, but to give myself the best chance for success this season, I’ve decided it’s in my best interest to skip Montreal,” Sabalenka said in a statement.
:The tournament was also jolted by another big-name pullout, with WTA No. 10 Paula Badosa set to skip the date due to her continuing back injury problems which contributed to her first-round Wimbledon loss in June.
