Fritz moves closer to Masters dream scenario
Taylor Fritz moved closer to a career dream of quarter-finals post in all Masters 1000 events as the Californian advanced to the Toronto fourth round 6-4, 6-2 over Canada’s Gabriele Diallo on Friday
The second seed was untroubled by the last local remaining in the home field, with Diallo making a nervous start which he never managed to fully overcome.
Fritz needed 75 minutes to advance over the No. 37 and set up a fourth-round clash with Jiri Lehecka.
“It was important not to let him get into the match and get the crowd fired up,” Frtiz said. “I knew the momentum could shift at any time.
“I couldn’t let up on my service games and I backed it up well from the baseline.
“His backhand was very solid and when I got the chance I went big on my forehand. I felt I could control the ball better in today’s cooler conditions.”
