Furious Fritz blasts “insane” ATP calendar
Taylor Fritz on Wednesday fired a shot across the bows , with serious complaints about a seemingly never-ending tournament schedule which looks set to explode in the face of ATP bosses.
The world No. 4 will be among the few top 10 players bothering with the inconvenient Toronto Masters which begins at the weekend.
The event – which begins a scant two weeks after Wimbledon – has suffered pullouts from world No. 1 Jannik Sinner (elbow injury), second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz *fatigue) and sixth-ranked 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovkc, (injury)
Players are voting with their feet against the new regime of 12-day Masters tournament in place of the classic – and more manageable – seven-day events.
“It’s insane. We are just adding stuff to the calendar over and over again,” the Californian said.
“Pretty much all the players have been asking for the season to be shorter, but all we are doing is just lengthening it, adding more stuff, we’re adding more longer tournaments..
“It’s funny how we find ways to shorten the schedule to make room for other tournaments, but we can’t find room to shorten the schedule just for there to be nothing.
“I’d love to see it go back to just two weeks and maybe we can have an extra, can shorten the season a week, I don’t know. But it’s a lot of tennis. It’s a lot of tennis upcoming.”
