Coco Gauff’s recent patchy form came back to haunt here on Saturday as the top seed at the Montreal Masters suffered a 6-1, 6-4 thrashing at the hands of a Canadian teenaged talent.

Gauff has been plagued in recent months by poor serving and an epidemic of double-faults, with her Roland Garros title in June followed by a Wimbledon first-round exit.

In Canada; Gauff went down in the fourth round to  Victoria Mboko, an 18-year-old local wild card on the rise, losing in barely an hour on court in the national Francophone capital .

She is the youngest woman to get this far in Canada since Gauff herself in 2022.“It’s incredible,” Mboko,  youngest Canadian quarter-finalist in Canada since Helen Kelesi in 1987, said. “I’m so happy to beat such a great champion.”

The player who began the season at 333 will now move to 53rd in the world,

Gauff accepted her defeat with good grace: “I’m sure we’re going to have many more battles in the future.

“She was playing well. I threw in a couple of unforced errors, but I knew it would be a tough match today. Unfortunately, it didn’t go my way.”
