Gauff re-writes the script in comeback win over Andreeva
Coco Gauff reversed course after a disaster opening, grinding through the gears and overcoming serving problems to reach her second semi-final at the US Open on Wednesday.
The 2023 champion returned to the final four here for the first time since she lifted her New York title, fighting back to subdue Roland Garros winner Mirra Andreeva 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
After dropping the opening set in 26 minutes to the fifth seed, no. 4 Gauff’s slide continued against the 19-year-old.
The American count not find a serve, striking all 12 of her double-faults in the fist two sets. With her frustration building, she even told her coaching box members to calm down,
After losing the opening set, Gauff then regrouped and earned a 4-2 margin in the second set before a run of four service breaks took the quarter-final into a tiebreaker, where the fourth seed saved two match points and threw herself a lifeline by converting on her own set point.
The momentum shifted was complete by the third set, with the Andreeva forehand dissolving in a barrage of errors and Gauff clinching victory in just under two and a half hours after breaking Andreeva twice and advancing when the teenager was passed on a Gauff match point.
“I had to re-set,” Gauff said. “I came out not feeling the ball and gave her too many free points. I actually through of Frances (Tiafoe) and his win last night (men’s quarters) and how he came back (from two sets down).
“We all want to play well in front of this crowd, I wanted to leave the court with no regrets. The only solution was to just fight.”
Gauff will bid for her second New York final when she plays new world No. 1 Elena Rybakina in the semis.
“It will be a tough match, the last time we played it was a tight three-setter. I look forward to these battles, they are the moments you live for.”
