Germany contain Canada 2-0 for Davis semi-final spot
Germany hammered Canada in both singles rubbers to earn an unbeatable 2-0 scoreline on Wednesday to advance at the Davis Cup Finals.
Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier put the side into the semi-finals of the worldwide team competition for the first time in five years.
Altmaier started the day as he defeated Gabriel Diallo 7-6 (5), 6-4, with Struff clinching the tie with a fightback win over Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
The Day 2 victory in Malaga puts Germany into a match against the Netherlands, which defeated Spain on Tuesday with Rafael Nadal signing off on his career.
Germany’s Stuff said his battle with Shapo was arduous. “Both players deserved to win, but I’m happy to get it over the line at the end.
He added: “Denis was playing amazing, coming out firing (with 27 aces), he was serving so well the whole match. It was tough to return.
“Even in the tiebreak he hit some winners. It was very close.”
The 43rd-ranked Struff was pleased with the trip into the final four for his nation.
“It will be amazing, It’s a big step for us to go from the quarters to the semis. We want to win and go to the finals now.
“We know the Germans and the Dutch have a little rivalry and the Dutch guys have amazing fans so I’m looking forward to it.”
