Grass-court gamble: Djoko ready to risk Wimbledon
A scant few weeks after surgery, Novak Djokovic is vowing to risk his repaired knee and will start what he hopes is a miracle comeback by travelling to Wimbledon.
The Serb who handed in a Roland Garros quarter-final walkover after jarring his right knee in the fourth round is not guaranteeing that he can front up a week from Monday when play starts at the grass major.
But he is hoping to at least give it a go in what may be a world record for a medial meniscus comeback scenario.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner is due in London on Monday, less than three weeks after his Paris surgery, according to the BBC.
Djokovic dropped a huge hint this week as to his intentions in an Instagram post which showed him using an exercise bike and leg weights.
He followed up with another post depicting frenetic activity including running, lunges and a lightweight serve motion.
“We keep building day by day,” the caption read.
The 37-year-old said he was working to return to the All England Club at all costs.
“My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going. I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible,” said the seven-time champion who hopes to make his 19th appearance at the tournament.
