Griekspoor fights off match points in upset of Medvedev
Tallon Griekspoor fought off four match points and needed four of his own to score the biggest win of his career as he knocked top seed Daniil Medvedev out in the second round of the ATP Dubai tournament on Thursday.
The 47th-ranked Dutchman struggled after saving four match-winners for his world No. 6 opponent who was bidding for a third consecutive semi-final here.
Griekspoor prevented that scenario with his 2-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 upset after more than two and a half hours.
“I’m super-happy with this win,” he said. “Daniil is an unbelievable competitor.
“He played so well in the first set (which Griekspoor lost in 29 minutes). I didnt do bad – he was just too good.
“When I broke him back in the second set, things seemed to be going my way.I was a little lucky on match points down.
“I was also lucky to finish this one off.”
The Dutch outsider wasted three winning chances in the final game before Medvedev, who had a spat with the umpire early on and refused the post-match handshake with the official, drove a return long on a fourth Griekspoor match point.
Griekspoor’s comeback was only his fourth win from 31 matches played against the top 10.
