Hardliner Mac would back player Grand Slam strike

John McEnroe is stirring the pot amid growing dis-satisfaction with player payouts at the Grand Slam events, with the TV commentator suggesting that he would back strike action at the four majors.

The issue has been bubbling under the surface for several years in the sport, with competitor prize money amounting to around 20 percent of tournament takings.

That does not sit well with the athletes – and Mac has a radical solution in mind.

“The players should be partners in the majors. The fact that they’re not causes friction — they’re getting such a small part of the revenue,” the former Laver Cup captain said during last weekend/s edition of the team exhibition in London.

“The only way to succeed in doing that, in my opinion, is to boycott one or two of these.”

The 67-year-old, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, also complained about mandatory Masters 1000 events, which result in ranking points penalties if not played.”They should play what they want. If you only play six tournaments but you win them all, you might be No. 1.

“This idea that you should play 20 tournaments and pick your best 15 — or whatever the rules are now — doesn’t get out the best in players.”
