Carlos Alcaraz was on Friday steeling himself for a final surge in next week’s Davis Cup after exiting the ATP Finals 7-6 (5), 6-4 to Alexander Zverev.

The Spaniard will be heading a national team with the entire focus on the farewell event of Rafael Nadal’s career.

The finals in storm-battered Malaga is guaranteed to be emotional, with the 38-year-old Spanish icon waiting until the last minute to make a decision on whether he is fit to play after a career marred by injury.

Meanwhile, captain David Ferrer will have to call upon an exhausted Alcaraz, who fought through breathing problems in three group matches at the ATP wrapup in Turin.

“It’s the last tournament of the year for me, probably one of the most special tournaments that I’m going to play,” the youngster said.

“Last tournament of Rafa, I’ll be able to be next to him in the last moments on a tennis court for him.”

But there is also a competition to try and win.

“The Davis Cup is a tournament I really want to win one day. When I was a kid, I’d dream about winning the Davis Cup, for Spain.

“This year we have a really special chance to win it. I will try to help the team to win.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Alcaraz must compensate for a long season of tennis.

There is nothing more he would rather do than just get off the court for a break before the 2025 grind kicks in.

“I’m (feeling) much better than last year, but I want to rest.  It’s not easy.

“I’ve been traveling a lot in this part of the year. I miss home. I want to spend time with my close people.

“I have to travel, I have to play more tournaments, more matches.

“I have to find it enjoyable playing these kinds of tournaments; it’s a privilege.”
