Italy takes 1-0 lead as iconic umpire calls his final match

Matteo Berrettini handed Italy 1 -0 lead over the Netherlands in the Davis Cup Final on Sunday as he won a match umpired in Malaga by chair legend Carlos Bernardes.

Former Wimbledon finalist Berrettini, ranked 35th after several seasons of injury setbacks, defeated  Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2.

Brazil’s Bernardes marked the end of a 40-year umpiring career as officiated his final match.

Berrettini paid tribute to the beloved official after securing victory, with the pair exchanging warm words at the char.

The Italian secured victory in 78 minutes, firing 16 aces.

Italy can wrap up a second straight Davis Cup title if Jannik Sinner defeats Tallon Griekspoor in the second singles.
