Jabeur to jack it in – for now
Treble Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur bowed to frustration on Thursday, quitting tennis for the moment to regain her psychological equilibrium.
The Tunisian, who finished runner-up at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2022 and reached the final in Paris a year later, said she is pausing her career after months of poor results and frustration.
The 30-year-old made first-round exits in both Paris and Wimbledon, quitting her match in the third set at the All England club. She has also been dealing with a run of injuries.
“Over the past two years, I’ve pushed myself hard, battled injuries, and faced many other challenges,” the one-time world No. 2 said in a social media post.
“But deep down, it’s been a long time since I’ve felt truly happy on the court. Tennis is such a beautiful sport.
“But today, I think it’s time to step back and finally prioritize myself: to breathe, heal, and rediscover the simple joy of living.”
Jabeur added: “Thank you to all my fans for your understanding. Your support and love mean so much to me.
“I carry it with me always. Even when I’m away from the court, I’ll continue to stay close and connected in different ways, sharing this journey with all of you.”
Jabeur currently ranks 71st, winning the last of her five WTA titles in September, 2023.
