Kokk expecting a dose of crazy from Kyrgios

Thanasi Kokkinakis expects all hell to break loose at the Australian Open as he and best mate Nick Kyrgios attempt to repeat their 2022 title at the home Grand Slam.

The 28-year-old ranked 77th will team with his controversial compatriot at Melbourne Park when the first major of the season begins on January 12.

“Nick gets fired up, he can lose his marbles on and off court,’ Kokkinakis said on Saturday prior to the start of his home Adelaide International.

“Playing again with Nick is going to be a circus. I’ve barely played doubles since 2022, though we did play the ATP finals (last November in Turin).

“It’s  great to play with him, we both talk rubbish out there. We’re not expecting much but the momentum can build.”

Kokkonakis admitted that doubles will necessarily take a back seat at the first major of the 2025 season.

“Singles is still the priority. If we had any tough five-setters .It would be tough to back it up in dubs.

“Everyone will be hungry to beat us in the first round, but it should be fun even though we’ve not practised doubles.

“I wouldn’t play doubles except with Nick, it’s a cool and special moment.”

Kokkinakis is also dreaming of duplicating his 2022 title in Adelaide, an event played in full Covid lockdown mode.

“I’m happy to be back, it’s a special event and I’m excited to get started. I’ve had a hip niggle but I’ve felt good the last few days in practice.

“When I won here in 2022 it was the best moment of my career. I knew it was a special feeling, but it’s not something you take for granted.”

Kokkinakis will face a demanding opening test as he plays China’s on-form Zhang Zhizhen.
