Sebastian Korda came good on his second winning chance as he stunned Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 for the biggest win of his career on Sunday to reach the Miami Masters fourth round.

The son of former Australian Open champion Petr Korda failed to serve out a straight-sets win over the world No. 1 Spaniard who lost a match for only the second time this season.

But Korda held his nerve through a rough patch, breaking in the seventh game of the deciding set and closing out the upset two games later on a second match point as Alcaraz returned long.

“It feels great,” Korda said of his victory. “But i certainly took the scenic rout for sure.”That was more stress than I wanted. I’m happy with how I kept believing. More stress than I wanted.

“I got into some nasty situations but I kept believing. I thought I payed really well.”

The winner added: “There was a lot of soul searching. I’ve played a lot of great players but never was able to get it done,” he said after winning his first career match played against a world No. 1.

“The goal today was to play just average. But I was as aggressive as possible. That is how it has to be to beat the best players

“He’s unbelievable in every aspect of his game.”

Alcaraz, now 17-2 on the season, temporarily found his survival instincts in the second set as he trailed a set and a break, rallying to level a five games each.

Korda served for the match in the second set but as unable to close it out.

The top seed secured the set on a second break as Korda’s chance at the biggest victory of his career faded away thanks to 15 unforced errors in the set,

Alcaraz kept up the pressure in the deciding set but lost serve for 3-4, opening the door for Korda’s second chance.
