Kyrgios handed Brisbane wild card, but AO still up in the air
Nick Kyrgios has been handed a wildcard entry into next month’s Brisbane International as the controversial player holds out hope for a similar invite into the Australian Open.
The ATP’s most intermittent player last competed in March and has spent the last several seasons out of action with various injuries.
Kyrgios, who once ranked 13th but now stands No, 673, has asked for a free pass into the open main draw in Melbourne; but the decision has been put on hold while officials ponder the wisdom of any such move.
The longtime bad boy of the sport is an acquired taste and has admitted at age 30 that his career is quickly drawing to a close.
The one-time Wimbledon finalist manged just five singles matches in 2025 – losing four of them.
He is involved in a “Battle of the Sexes” with WTA No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai next Sunday and is due to appear at the Kooyong exhibition in Melbourne in the days before the January 18 start of the first Grand Slam of the season.
