Kyrgios lines up his excuses after AO snub
Nick Kyrgios was quick to come up with a Plan B after being overlooked for one of the three remaining wildcard entries into the Australian Open.
The one-time Melbourne finalist whose injury-and-motivation-damaged career has become a parody did not get the free entry on Friday with eight days to go before the start of the first major of the season.
Instead, two fellow minor Aussies and 2014 champion Stan wawrinka of Switzerland got the nod.
Kyrgios wasted no time in sketching out a new personal spin campaign, saying he is not ready to play singles. The No. 670 who has competed in exactly seven matches over the past three seasons said he would concentrate on doubles and “give his spot” to others.
Kyrgios and mate Thanasi Kokkinakis have an Open doubles entry.
“After some good conversations with TA [Tennis Australia], I’ve made the call to focus on doubles for this year’s AO.
“I’m fit and back on court, but 5-setters are a different beast and I’m not quite ready to go the distance yet,” he posted on social media.“This tournament means everything to me, but – I’d rather give my spot to someone who’s ready to make their moment count.
It’s all building blocks and I’ll be back next year and pumped to compete. See you out there.”
