Late night drama as Alcaraz taken to fourth set by Dzumhur

Carlos Alcaraz kept his Roland Garros title defence alive but had to scramble to beat Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 6-3 ,4-6, 6-4.

The 22-year-old Spaniard was a break down early in the fourth set but managed to close it out after three hours and 14 minutes to make it into the fourth round.

Alcaraz was broken when he served for the match at 5-4, but the defending champion  responded with a break of his own to seal the win.

The second seed said afterwards, “Thank you to the people who stayed – it’s midnight now. I don’t know if I would have stayed to watch my match, so thank you for staying to the end.

“Now it’s the other match, we call it the other match where I have to recover and eat”

I probably won’t get to bed until 3am. Behind the scenes we play another match to recover for the next one.”

“I didn’t enjoy it too much today, I suffered quite a lot but I’m happy to have played a good match with Damir.

We played some good rallies.”

Alcaraz’ next opponent is 13th seed is Ben Shelton in a fourth-round clash.

Alcaraz leads Shelton 2-0 in their ATP Head2Head series.
