Laver Cup boss defends event despite calendar bloat

This weekend’s Laver Cup should not be blamed for helping to crowd the tennis calendar, with the event’s manager touting the special status of the Roger Federer-inspired team competition.

The seventh edition of the Europe v World event is being staged in Berlin, with Federer’s business partner Tony Godsick teeing up reason as to why the annual event should not be mentioned as part of the ATP scheduling problems.

“Every player loves to play it, we have the best captains and the best sponsors, we will have new and bigger ones,” the former manager of Federer told Ubitennis.

“Everything is working. So is there too much Laver Cup? I don’t think there is enough Laver Cup.”

He then played the Federer card:  “Roger Federer would also say: just because there are so many events on the calendar, you don’t have to play them all.

“Sure, Roger used to take breaks. Maybe he could because he was going through so many tournaments, but you can do whatever you want with the scheduling.”

Godsick concluded: “I don’t think the calendar is too crowded.

“There are a lot of wonderful events in tennis right now, so we should continue to build them to innovate.

“If  we stay the same and only have four Grand Slams and a lot of men’s and women’s events, some combined, some not, I don’t think we will be able to compete in the market unless we can come out with some really creative events like the Laver Cup. “
