John McEnroe heads into his final edition as World captain at the Laver Cup this weekend with the 65-year-old admitting that it’s time for him to pass the job on.

Mac will be replaced at the 2025 edition of the Europe v World team event by Andre Agassi, 54.

McEnroe is hoping to get his side to a third straight title this weekend in Berlin after reversing some losing momentum two years ago at London’s O2 arena.

The former tennis bad boy and current TV commentator said that he’s ready to step away.

“These (Gen Zed) players are younger than most of my kids,” he said in the run-up to competition. “As you get older, you feel like you get a little more distant from the sport itself.

“That’s part of the reason I’ve really enjoyed doing this, because I just feel like a part of it for a while,” McEnroe said.

“You feel the excitement sitting on the bench at the Laver Cup, and being that close, it’s not often I get that chance anymore, very rare, actually, so I’ll miss that,” he said.

But he added: ““I won’t miss the stress too much because all these guys, all 12 players and the substitute players are all very competitive, and so are the coaches.”

Mac gave big props to Agassi as his eight-time Grand slam champion countryman steps into his role.

“Andre is going to do a great job. I played him when he was 16 or 17, he had that personality, and you just knew something big was going to happen,”

“Players are going to love him as well. It’s going to be fun to watch from more of a distance the next couple of years.”

The Laver Cup will be making a wholesale captaincy switch at next autumn’s edition, with Frenchman Yannick Noah replacing Bjorn Borg for Team Europe.
