Canadian teenaged outsider Victoria Mboko pounced on 47 unforced errors from defending champion Madison Keys on Thursday to upset the defending Australian Open champion for a place in the Adelaide International semi-finals.

The 19-year-old held her nerve for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 defeat of the holder at Memorial Drive, who rode her momentum a year ago to the Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

Keys twice trailed a set and a break but could not sustain a fightback. Mboko lost the second set but had every answer in the third, breaking Keys twice on the way to securing victory in two hours..

“There were ups and downs in the match, I had to weather the storm,” No. 17 . Mboko said. “She won here last year so I know coming in this would be a big fight.

“I’m glad I was able to get it done.”

She added: “Madison is a tough player, she didn’t get to where she is (WTA number nine) without a reason. It’s nice to play a former champion to see what I can do.”

Mboko plays the semis against Australian Kimberly Birrell. “I want to have fun, see what I can do and hope for the best.”
