Montreal loses Zheng to elbow surgery
The Toronto Masters lose another draw card as WTA No. 2 Zheng Qinwen pulled out after undergoing elbow surgery.
The Canadian event which begins at the weekend will now be without the Olympic champion as well as fatigued world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who also withdrew from the start of the summer hardcourt campaign.
“(I’m) grateful to have [the procedure. *I’ll be) doing everything I can to come back stronger and healthier,” the Roland Garros quarter-finalist said.
Zheng has been wearing a sleeve since the start of the season to combat what she called “persistent pain” in her right elbow.
She posted a picture of herself in a hospital bed, vowing to return to the Tour as soon as rehab is complete, adding that even after trying various treatment alternatives “the discomfort never fully went away.”

She called her pause “just a short break, and I see it as a necessary step toward a better version of myself on court.”
