Murray farewell torpedoed by Raducanu

Andy Murray’s potential goodbye match at Wimbledon was exploded on Saturday after mixed doubles partner Emma Raducanu withdrew from the first-round encounter with a wrist injury.

Tournament officials announced the bad news to fans to add to the misery on a gloomy day of on-off rain interruptions.

Murray and Raducanu – who’s fitness for her fourth-round singles match on Sunday may be called into question – were replaced in the mixed draw by the American pairing of Rajeev Ram and Katie Volynets.

Murray had been planning the mixed event as his farewell to Wimbledon after withdrawing last week from singles and losing in the men’s double first round with his brother Jamie.

Wimbledon bosses staged a tearful goodbye to the national tennis hero after the doubles defeat, which will now stand as the 37-year-old Scot’s official goodbye to SW 19.

Raducanu instantly became tennis enemy No. 1 among British fans after a statement from her camp:

“Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so therefore I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight.

“I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but got to take care.”
Murray’s mother Judy called the decision”astounding” as he son lost his chance to play his last match (or more) at Wimbledon.
