Marcos Giron overcame his awe at facing Andy Murray, with the American producing a 6-3, 6-4 victory on Tuesday to send the three-time Grand Slam champion out in the first round of the Stuttgart Open.

The 54th-ranked Giron won his first match here after a pair of first-round losses, sending his former world No. 1 opponent back to the drawing board with only one more grass event at Queen’s Club, London, before making what is billed as the final Wimbledon appearance of his career.

The 30-year-old Giron had stars in his eyes during his winning performance against  the 37-year-old legend.

“I grew up watching Andy, It was an honour just to be on the court with him,” Giron said.

Murray said he has a long way to go to lifting his game – even on his preferred surface.

“I’ve been struggling with breaking serve,” the Scot said. “I’ve not broken for a few matches and that’s usually been a strength of mine.

“On a quick surface like grass, the sets are tight. When your chances come you have to be clinical – he was and I wasn’t.”

he added: “I’ve had some tough months but physically I feel OK just now – the ankle, the back. It’s all felt better since going onto grass. .

“But my game needs to improve, the level of tennis on the Tour is high. I need to play better if I want to win more matches.”
