Murray’s surgery scenario could end Wimbledon dream

Andy Murray’s dream of exiting tennis in style with a final Wimbledon entry and possibly playing the Olympics may be wrecked by reported weekend back surgery for the 37-year-old.

Britain’s PA reported that the three-time Grand Slam champion was due for a medical procedure at the weekend on his dodgy back – a problem for 15 years or more.

An intervention of that nature could easily keep the Scot away from the All England Club, where he owns two trophies. Murray has said he is considering ending his career after Wimbledon and the Games in Paris from July 26.

The latest back problem came as the former No. 1 and five-time Queen’s Club winner was unable to last for more than five games this week as he retired in he second round to Jordan Thompson with his chronic back problem.

He explained the long-running problem this week: “My back’s been a problem for quite a while and it’s been sore in the build-up to the tournament.”

But there remains a huge doubt if Murray can pull up fit for the Wimbledon start a week from Monday (July 1).

“Maybe there is something that can be done between now and then, , to help the (painful) right side (of his body).”
